Root canal treatment is applied to a tooth that has either severely decayed or is infected. The purpose of the treatment is to prevent further decay of the tooth and avoid tooth extraction. Also known as endodontic treatment, root canal treatment is the process of removing the infected, injured, or dead pulp from the tooth. The pulp comprises of nerves and blood vessels which become infected and therefore need to be removed. The space inside the hard layers of each tooth is called the root canal system. Tooth abscess usually occurs when the bacteria (germs) enter the tooth through deep cavities, cracks, or flawed fillings. An abscessed tooth is a tooth with an infection in the pulp. Infected pulp needs immediate treatment. An abscessed tooth may cause severe pain and/or swelling. An untreated abscessed tooth can cause serious oral health problems.
